SECURITY ISSUES

A business dealing in services of any kind in a local setting must have the trust and good will of its neighbors. This is especially so of a portraiture business of any sort, either artistic or photographic. I have been doing portraits of people in the Jackson are for over 20 years with over half of that time being commercial. As a pencil portraitist I have worked from pictures that I took or were provided to me from the client/model my rules for that were simple. No one ever saw a photo that I used for the creation of a drawing. You will find that no one can to say from experience that I have violated that rule. Where the finished product is the photograph itself that necessarily has to change, but I am still going to keep the rules as simple as possible.

SECURITY OF YOUR PERSON

1. Single males are suspect and I am afraid that I am as single male. At present the business is in my home in order that I may keep the costs low for both you and me. It is conducted at my computer to show you what I can do and give you ideas for what you might wish to do and in a spare room that is just jammed with lights, props and backdrops. I have a couple of rules that are going to be enforced strictly for your protection and mine.

If you are under 18 Years of Age:
You Will be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

If you are over 18 years of Age:
Please bring a friend or relative with you, whoever you are most comfortable with.
I may ask them to hold a light and they might want to get shot (so-to-speak) themselves.

2. I use poster paint for the body painting. If you made it through kindergarten alive, you probably won’t have allergic reaction issues. I had my choice between poster paint which lasts for one or two hours and then flakes or house paint which lasts until the skin comes off. I opted for the former. The poster paint is warm water washable and comes out of most fabrics if you don’t do a hot water wash on it first. I say most because I don’t know every fabric and one time I did have someone complain about a real silk garment. Who in the heck wears real silk nowadays? I am experimenting with a professional makeup fixative and temporary colored hair spray as well. If you are prone to makeup allergies you will want to tell me. I have had people want to make the paint last longer than the hour or two I predict. I had one lady at the fair come back and tell me that her kids nagged her to figure out some way that they could show off at school the next day and she put clear nail polish over it. I don’t recommend it particularly, but she did say it worked. I have had limited success in this area with hair spray and light applications of skin conditioners like Vaseline Intensive Care which keep the paint from drying completely because it flakes off because your skin bends and the dry paint doesn’t.

SECURITY OF YOUR IMAGE

If you are a paying client, no one will ever see your picture without your express, written permission except for processing parties*. There will be times that I am so bursting with pride in an image that I may make arrangements with you for people to see your image but that will only be done with a signed written release as permission to do so. This release can be made to include only such images as you are happy with, though my showing a bad picture of you would hardly be in my best interests anyway.

* If I am using an outside service to do processing. I always go to a responsible service where I can deal directly with a human being that is known to me. If I am using a 35 mm camera instead of the digital, the film is run through the chemicals at Meyers only and then processed optically at Image Gallery where I know the few employees and know they can be trusted. If I am having color copies made it is at Office Max where I know the people as well.
